January 2021 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear parents and guardians,

Happy New Year and a warm welcome to the second half of our academic school year.  Despite the pandemic facing us during this very unusual time, our goal is to continue to create a community setting which is academically challenging, multidisciplinary, innovative, technologically friendly, and safe for our students.  I extend a warm thank you to all the teaching staff, educational assistants, administrative assistant/secretary, maintenance and cleaning staff, students and parents for their steadfast unconditional support during these adverse times. Thank you also to everyone who supported PAC via the Wine Raffle HCS fundraiser.

I just want to bring to your attention three more items that are schedules for this month:

St. Alphonsus School Centennial - 1921-2021

Are you an alumni (or supporter) of St. Alphonsus School? Then we want to connect with you! Our school community is celebrating our centennial in 2021; what a momentous milestone! Our Anniversary Committee has been busy planning virtual events and in-school activities to mark the year.
Our first event is a  Virtual Gala Celebration on Saturday, February 27th.  Join us for a fun-filled “at home” experience, including  a charcuterie board loaded with meats and cheeses, choice of dinner for two from Calabria Market, wine, pizza for the family, dessert from Dolce Bake Shop, a Coal and Canary Candle, a chocolate pinata cake and much, much more! The evening will feature a video tribute for the school’s 100th Anniversary. Prize packages will be auctioned off by online bid and we will draw for the $1000 Raffle winning ticket. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Email for more information.  As well, find information on our upcoming events and check out our online photo archive at
Holy Cross School embraces virtual format and heightened role of STEM projects in our students’ education

Holy Cross School Science Fair and Bison Regional Science Fair (BRSF) has made the decision to run the 2021 fair as a virtual event. Under the current circumstances this is clearly the best choice. We are very pleased to announce that we will be offering all of our usual awards. In addition, plans are being developed to include on-line science activities, a guest speaker, and an award ceremony to help to make the experience as exciting as possible.

Students will be chosen from among the gold medal winners to represent the Bison region at the Virtual Canada Wide Science Fair in May 2021.

Last year, was our first virtual STEM fair. These projects can be viewed at under the “Explore”.

Please stay tuned for more details and contact me directly if you have any questions.

Advice How to Stay Active at Holy Cross School- During Remote Learning:
  • One of the most important things you can do for you and your families physical health during this time is make sure you stay active and get at least 30 min each day!
  • It's not difficult to be physically active at home, honestly the best thing students can do right now is go outside!
  • Challenge to my students was to use every opportunity to go outside and play as a study break from remote learning.
  • Also please remember all HCS Teams accounts have new workout videos posted - Phys.Ed activity section for fun ideas to keep active.
  • Go Saints Go!
Holy Cross presented Sister Eucharia with a gift to celebrate her 25th Silver Jubilee of first religious profession of vows.
