February 2021 Newseltter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

St. Valentine’s Day, I Love to Read and black history month are just some of the events happening in February.  A number of special guests will join us during this period.

Black history month is observed across Canada and it gives all of us an opportunity to explore, examine their contributions and familiarize us with the history of the African diaspora. While Valentine’s Day also called St. Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is a day where many people exchange cards, gifts even flowers for someone special.  It is an annual holiday celebrated by people in many countries and it celebrates love and affection. We at Holy Cross School will be celebrating St. Valentines Day on Friday, February 12, 2021.

New Student Registration - Admission Policy
All new student registrations will be accepted Monday, February 1, 2021.  Please read carefully our Admission Policy regarding new student registration.

Virtual - Open House
For those who are able to join us, we invite you to the Holy Cross School “Virtual - Open House” which will take place this year exclusively on-line on Tuesday, February 2.  Please click here to access HCS virtual - open house site.

Reminder that February 8 -12 is Catholic Schools Week and therefore, there will be No School on Friday, February 12, 2021.  All Holy Cross School staff will be attending an in-service.

Reading Month
Once again, our Province has designated the month of February as a reading month.  A number of educational reading activities will be organized by our teaching staff to support this event.  Please keep your calendar open for we will be celebrating this event with special guests, readings of special books and many other related activities. As you can see, reading is a foundational skill to good citizenship, employment, and success in daily school activities including one’s professional life.  Together we have the power to intellectually engage our students and prepare them to face the challenges of tomorrow.

With Christian greetings,

Alexander Cap, B.Ed., M.Ed.

In February, we celebrate Black History Month. We take the opportunity to educate ourselves about and honour all the achievements of this diverse community both locally and globally. We also reflect on the issues and difficulties that were faced and continue to be faced by the Black community. This is a time when we honour the progress, diversity, achievements, and contributions of black people in Canada and the world.

Like previous years, we celebrated “Black History Month” on February 1st. We are thankful to Minister of Mental Health, Recovery, and Well being Audrey Gordon for her gift of time and expertise on subject matter. Our grade 7 & 8 had an opportunity to hear from minister Gordon and learn about knowledge of the past helps to understand the present and prepare for the future.

May the Force Be With You!

Students enjoyed learning about “Forces and Structures”. They used household materials such as Legos, books, empty boxes, cups/saucers and much more to describe various external forces (acting on) and the various internal forces (acting within) of their structure. Great to see their enthusiasm and self responsibility of their learning.
Upcoming Free STEM/Coding Opportunity - Go Code Girl

We understand that with the restrictions, students aren't getting the same level of access to the extracurricular opportunities as they would have prior to COVID-19. So, we are trying to continually fill that gap. We will be participating in a free half day event called Go Code Girl, which normally hold in person, but this time around this would be virtually, which we believe will enable more youth to participate.

We are hoping to engage with youth who are interested in coding, technology and engineering, or even youth who never thought that that was an option for them to access. As the industry grows there are so many potential learning opportunities for youth and Go Code Girl can be a good starting point to explore these options!

Go Code Girl is an interactive day, for girls in Gr. 7 to 9 but we have had younger Gr. 6 participants and older as well, of computer science & engineering intended to expose girls to programming, computational thinking and digital skills through a variety of fun sessions! When students register, they will have an opportunity to take part in online coding activities prior to the event. The more lessons a student completes, the more times their name will be entered to win a prize.

Each year, we at Holy Cross School partner with groups who have expertise and youth programs in different areas of computer science & engineering. Our partners this year are UManitoba Women in Computer Science, KIDS CODE JEUNESSE, Girls In Gaming, University of Manitoba Space and Technology Society.

This year thanks to our incredible partners, participants will get to learn about coding and how it can manipulate technology; they will learn about video game development from the creative as well as technical point of view; and they will get a chance to learn about space engineering, and how they don’t necessarily need an engineering degree to pursue Space Industry.

Go Code Girl is happening virtually on February 6, 2021 entirely all free of charge. Because we are going virtual for this event, internet connectivity and access to a digital device will be required.

Registrations are now open at:  https://www.wisekidneticenergy.ca/go-code-girl.

If you any further questions, please feel free to reach out and we will do our best in answering those.
