February 2018 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The month of February has a number of interesting events including I Love to Read month and St. Valentine’s Day.  A number of special visitors will join us during the I Love to Read month. St. Valentines Day is a day where many people exchange cards, gifts even flowers for someone special.  It is an annual holiday celebrated by people in many countries and it celebrates love and affection. We at Holy Cross School will be celebrating St. Valentines Day on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.  Ash Wednesday will be held on February 14, and Mgr. Albert Legatt, Archbishop of Saint-Boniface will be joining us for the service.  This event will be held in the Holy Cross School gym. This year Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine’s Day and marks the beginning of Lent.  Lent is treated as a period of reflection and a time of fasting.
Re-Registration and New Student Registration - Admissions Policy
All re-registrations for the 2018-2019 school year must be submitted by Monday, February 26, 2018.   All new student registrations will be accepted starting Tuesday, February 27, 2018.  Please read carefully our Admissions Policy regarding re-registration and new student registration.
Open House
For those who are able to join us, we invite you to the Holy Cross School “Open House” which will take place in the school GYM on Tuesday, February 6, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Please attend and bring several friends with you, to support this important evening.
Reminder that February 12 -16 is Catholic Schools Week and therefore, there will be no classes on Friday, February 16, 2018.  All Holy Cross School staff will be attending an in-service.

Reading Month
Once again our Province has designated the month of February as a reading month.  A number of educational reading activities will be organized by our teaching staff to support this event.  Please keep your calendar open for we will be celebrating this event with special guests, readings of special books and many other related activities. As you can see, reading is a foundational skill to good citizenship, employment, and success in daily school activities including one’s professional life.  Together we have the power to intellectually engage our students and prepare them to face the challenges of tomorrow.
Thank you and God Bless!

Hello everyone!
Our school recently held a Science Fair Kick-off on January 18, 2018 which involved Grades K-8. Everyone, teachers, and students, enjoyed watching the Magic Show, prepared for us by the visitors from Let’s Talk Science! The Magic Show included a variety of extra-ordinary and interesting experiments, which some students took part in, as volunteers.
Besides having the Magic Show, each class had some scientific experiments of their own. Some classes had designated Science Club members who demonstrated simple and easy science experiments using simple items that may be found in your household! Students had a chance to try these experiments and find out the science behind them. Others had a staff member from Let’s Talk Science come to their class to facilitate fun-filled science-related activities with the students.
None of these would have been possible without the Holy Cross School Science Club, Robotics club, Let’s Talk Science group, and Dr. Bajaj, our Science Coordinator.
Since the Science Fair Kick-off has occurred, the Science Fair will be coming up soon! This year, the Science Fair for Grades 5-8 will be held on April 10th, while the Science Expo for Grades K-4 will be on April 28th.
Start thinking about your science fair topic! If you’re having trouble deciding on your topic, think of the subjects you find interest in. Challenge yourself and feed your curiosity. When choosing a topic, make sure you do a project that you want to do and a project that you will have fun doing. Science is fun, especially when you research or prove something that you want to know.
Following our school science fair, our school is hosting Bison Regional Science Fair and winners of HCS will be competing at Bison Regional Science Fair with other catholic schools.
If you have any question or concern, please don’t hesitate to approach Dr. Bajaj about it.
Let us do our Science projects not just because we have to, but because we want to. Let’s use our God-given talents and intelligence to make Him proud.
Let us all have fun!!!

Dear Holy Cross School families,

Soon your child will be taking part in an exciting school event- a Science fair. For Grades 5-8 it will be on April 10th, 2018 and Science expo for Grades K-4 will be on April 26th, 2018. Winners of Holy Cross School will be competing at the Bison Regional Science Fair where they can earn a free trip to Canada Wide Science Fair. This year Canada Wide Science Fair will be in Ottawa from May 12-19th, 2018. More details will be given to the participants as the time persists.

Science Fair Display Boards can be purchased from the office and cost is $4 per board. Students can do an individual project or with a partner.

Science offers children experiences in exploring beyond the classroom to understand more about their world. Investigating a selected Science topic in detail can open up new vistas and a new appreciation for not only this planet but the words beyond.

I would like to invite you to work along with your child as he or she selects, investigates, and reports on an appropriate area of Science. With your interest and encouragement, your child can develop the skills and attitudes he or she needs to make this project a valuable experience. But do encourage your child to do the most, if not all, of the work. Parents sometimes want to build an entire project, to make it “perfect”. It is more important that your child wrestle with problems and try to solve them, because learning is in the doing. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child’s individual effort and design.

Remember your child’s success in our science fair will not be measured by ribbons, trophies, or certificates. Your child will succeed by learning and understanding more about Science and how scientists’ work. Awards are secondary. The real goal of the Science fair is stimulating your child’s curiosity about the world.

I look forward to your participation in our upcoming science fair. Please call or email anytime with your questions and suggestions. Let’s work together so that our Science fair will be a memorable and pleasant experience for your child.

Dr. A. Bajaj
Science Fair Organizer
Please be advised that the cost of Science Boards purchased through Holy Cross School this year is $4.00.
Science is Serious Fun : )
What happens when you give marshmallows and spaghetti to our grades 7s? Our junior high students armed only with enthusiasm and open minds were very busy doing Science Activities from the Marshmallow Challenge to Caring for Our Watersheds. We also had a presenter from Winnipeg Harvest to talk about  the Empty Bowls Project, which we will be continuing in following months. Stay tuned for more Science activities @ Holy Cross School.
Please keep your tuition account up to date!  We accept cash, cheque, Interac, Visa and Mastercard.  If you are unable to make it into the office, we do accept credit card payments over the phone.

Should you have outstanding fees, please remit payment at your earliest convenience.

Domino's Pizza coupon cards are still available!  They are only $5.00 for 5 coupons of "buy 1 pizza get a second pizza for 99 cents".
