March 2018 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you are probably aware, our school is in the forefront of new pedagogical ideas and innovations. A good example of this is the recent (February 22, 2018) provincial “Outstanding Science Educator” of the year award given to our Holy Cross School instructor Dr. Anju Bajaj.  Let me take this opportunity to acknowledge her work and the impact she has had on our students and province.  Congratulations! Dr. Bajaj, you make us proud! Holy Cross School also serves as a hub for science activities for all Manitoba schools.  The “Bison Regional Science Fair” is celebrating its second year and we invite all parents and guardians to join and support our students.
Just a reminder that our grade 5 – 8 Science Fair is scheduled for April 10th, between 8:00 – 3:00 pm and our K – 4 Science Expo will be held on April 26th, at 9:30 – 10:30 am.  This is a wonderful occasion for parental involvement and support in the above endeavours.

March 6 - 2:00 pm.  - Staff Meeting

Our spring break this year falls on March 26 until the 3rd of April.  A reminder that classes will resume on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2018.  Be sure to have a Happy Easter, a safe Spring Break and please find time to enjoy yourself.
Once again, if I can be of any assistance to either students or parents, please do not hesitate to call me or drop by the school.

Once again, I Love to Read Month was a huge success at our school. A big thank you goes out to all of our guest readers and to the teachers who supported the program and welcomed readers into their classrooms. We were very fortunate again this year to have readers from all walks of life! We had guests from radio, TV, the Canadian Armed Forces, Winnipeg Police Services, Take Pride Winnipeg, an author and even a reader from The CNIB who read to the students in braille. Thank you to the following readers who came and shared their love of reading with our staff and students:

Colleen Bready, CTV News
Pamela Roz, QX 104 FM
Tanya Blatz and Tom Ethans, Take Pride Winnipeg
Brianna Fuellbrandt, Canadian National Institute for the Blind
 and her driver Brenda Pankhurst
Constable Marnie Minkus, Winnipeg Police Service
Tam Nguyen, author of “A Lucky Man”
From The Canadian Armed Forces:
Capt. Wright Erubi
Capt. Bettina McCulloch-Drake
A special thank you goes out to Greg Selinger, MLA for St. Boniface for his generous donation of new books for our school library.

As a parent of children at Holy Cross School and a member of the School Board, I am extremely pleased that our children have a science teacher, the caliber of Dr. Bajaj. She goes above and beyond what the curriculum asks for in science education. She exposes our children to many more opportunities that would be awarded to them at many other schools. Our students have the chance to not only experiment and invent in their classroom setting, but Dr. Bajaj arranges for them to meet with industry leaders inside and outside of school, giving our children opportunities, many would not otherwise receive.

Dr. Bajaj is truly dedicated to her profession, from offering Robotics and Science Club for students after hours, to the long hours she puts into planning and running not only Holy Cross School’s Science Fair, but also the Bison Reginal Science Fair. She goes above and beyond what is asked for.

I am inspired by the enthusiasm Dr. Bajaj shows for her profession and our students are as well. She has shown our female student population that science is not just for “boys” and is reflected in the amount of girls we have each year, who compete to be in after school Science Club and who are award winning students at not just our Science Fairs, but the MSSS and Bison Regional. Not only is she a role model for our female students, but our school has a large population of new Canadians, many who come from war torn countries and communities where education in general is limited. Dr. Bajaj gives these students hope they would never have had, to see that they can accomplish anything especially in a field many students would feel is unattainable to them.

We are very lucky to have a teacher as dedicated and accomplished as Dr. Bajaj at our school, and hope others will acknowledge her for the outstanding service she provides to our future doctors, researchers, and inventors.

Congratulations to Dr. Bajaj for your award as Outstanding Science Educator of the Year by the Bioscience Association of Manitoba!
