April 2018 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome back everyone!

April is considered volunteer month. As such, let me take this opportunity to extend a warm thank you to all Holy Cross School volunteers for their heart of gold and selfless devotion to the education of our future generation.  Your time, talent and daily commitment needs to be acknowledged in expression if not in kind.   God bless you.

A successful parent teacher conference was just held at the end of March.   During that time it enabled parents and guardians to meet and discuss with teaching staff their children’s academic performance.

Please keep a close eye on these important dates:

  1. Science Fair – April 10 (grade 5-8 – 8:00 am – 3:00 pm)
  2. Bison Regional Science Fair April 11 - (12:30 – 5:30 pm)
  3. Bison Regional Science Fair April 12 - (8:00 – 5:00 pm)
  4. Science Expo - April 26 (grade K-4 – 9:30 am -10:30 am)

Once again, if I can be of any assistance to either students or parents, please do not hesitate to call me or drop by the school.

Alexander Cap, B.Ed., M.Ed.

Holy Cross Students had a blast enjoying the fun activities during Spirit Week.  We built Marshmallow Structures, played board games and Bingo. We had a school dance where we did the Limbo, created a Conga line, played musical chairs and showed off our dance moves. Everyone looked great in their “Sunday’s Best” outfits, future careers and sports jerseys.

Thank you to our Student Council members and teachers for organizing a fun filled week!

Would you enjoy being part of a lively Science Fair Event where enthusiastic students are proudly exhibiting their hard work?
Are you looking for a one-time, half day volunteer opportunity, rather than a long term commitment?  Then consider volunteering as an event or registration volunteer at the Holy Cross School Science Fairs to be held from April 10th-April 12th, 2018  from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for Grades 4-8.

You will be able to sign up for 30 minutes to an hour shift to help students to set up projects, direct visitors and monitor the event, assist in tabulating scores and perform other tasks to keep the fair moving.  Please contact me at Holy Cross School if you are interested or if you have any questions.  I will be sending a sign-up sheet to interested volunteers as a next step.

Thank you.

keep it up.
Over 500,000 children and youth across Canada will be participating in local and regional science and technology fairs in every part of the country in March/April, and the very best of these participants will earn the right to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Fair, our annual national championships, under the auspices of Youth Science Canada.

It is in the best interests of our society and our economy to support the creation of an innovation culture and the nurturing of a generation of scientifically literate young people who will push forward the boundaries of our knowledge and improve the quality of our lives in the future, and all of us should be supporting and celebrating our young scientists.

We emphasize “process skills” (asking questions, making observations, recording and analyzing data, communicating findings) along with “workplace skills” (teamwork, problem-solving, active learning, critical thinking).
Whats better than a hands-on science experiment? A school full of them! Science Club and Robotics club had a Mad Scientist Day on March 6th in the afternoon, students and teachers participated in about twenty hands-on experiments that explained science concepts in simple ways.
Grade 8 Cell-a-bration Day

Our grade 8 had an excellent "Cell-a-bration Day, students made three-dimensional models and an edible cell models with cake, candies and pasta....yum yum yummy cells!!!
