November 2018 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

November is an important month for our school and a number of significant events will be held in our institution. Holy Cross School Remembrance Day Commemoration is scheduled for Monday, November 9th, 2018 at 10:30 am in the MPR room. An invitation is extended to everyone to attend this year’s Remembrance Day. “Lest We Forget!”

In Canada, Remembrance Day is an annual memorial day observed every November 11. On that day, we honour and pay our respects to all men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces who sacrificed their life, so that we may continue to enjoy our democratic way of life in our country. The red poppy has been selected as a symbol of Remembrance Day in Canada and will be available for a small donation at the school office. All funds raised will be forwarded to a Legion representative in our community. We look forward to your support in this important endeavour.   A Scholastic Book fair will be held on November 27 -30 and your support for this occasion would be helpful.

On another note, if you are interested in becoming a School Board Member, please do not hesitate to contact me at (204)-237-4936.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to either call, email or come and see us at the office.

Bag Up Manitoba Update
By: Colleen Dooley
Bag Up Manitoba is wrapping up and I am pleased to announce that Grade 2D counted over 1,400 bags this year. Thank you to everyone who sent in their unwanted plastic bags. Take Pride Winnipeg will be picking them up and turning them into Frisbees which we will pass on to our Phys. Ed. Program for use by all students. We had a lot of fun counting them and actually practiced hands on math problems by doing so.

Please note: the program is now over. Do not send any more bags in as they will be picked up at the very beginning of November. You can save them for next year as we will be participating in this event again every year that it is offered.

Thank you!
November 27th - 30th, 2018

Holy Cross School Participated in the Waste Reduction week. This year, it was from October 15-21, it is oriented to provide information and tips to reduce waste in all facets of daily living. The idea is to create solutions to face many environmental challenges such as climate change, water pollution or preservation of natural resources. Science Club and Robotics club students took lead to empower their peers with ideas on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Respect. We had a presenter from Green Action Centre to learn more about Composting. We explore the amazing process by which organic waste is turned into an invaluable soil amendment (humus) that plants love, identify some of the living organisms that do the work, and discuss why composting is so important in waste reduction. Waste Reduction Week in Canada starts on the third Monday of October every year.
Our Grade 7s with some 16,000 young Manitobans spent Tuesday, October 30th, getting inspired at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg as part of We Day. The event was organized by the Canadian charity Free The Children. According to founder Craig Kielburger, We Day is designed to motivate young people to help fight injustice and lead local and global change.
We had Spooktacular Bake Sale as the Science Club and Robotics Club prepared their scrumptious baked goods to sell. It was great to see our hall packed with eager customers! The children put a lot of effort into the sale and really enjoyed the experience.  Raised money will be used for the Science activities. A huge well done to the children and their parents for their brilliant effort, and thank you to everyone who came along.
