Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy New Year and welcome back everybody. Christmas was a time of joy for Christ was Born and an opportunity to spend some time with family and friends.

I extend a warm thank you to all the teaching staff, students and parents that helped or volunteered their time towards our annual Christmas school concert, which was held on Thursday, December 20, 2018.  A warm thank you goes to Miss Natashia Viselli, our Christmas Concert Director and Mrs. Heather Lampman our Musical Conductor, who contributed their time to this important event.  Thank you also to everyone who supported PAC via the Wine Raffle and the generous financial donations at the door.

Cool Learning in Ms. Tsiolas’ Classroom

The Grade 5 students in Ms. Tsiolas’ class participated in some interesting activities. In Social Studies while discussing Ch.2 Connections to the Land, students discussed the importance of pots. They discussed the two styles which were Laurel and Blackduck and the unique features each contained. As a class they created a rubric for the Vessel Challenge. They were allowed to use the styles discussed or create their own. They could use any material they wanted. The end result is shown below. Ms. Tsiolas was super impressed!!
The other challenge was Art based. Manitoba Theatre for Young People held an Art Contest, for their December Newsletter. It was to create a Winter Themed Painting or Drawing. Ms. Tsiolas’ class was up for the challenge and created some beautiful artwork as shown below.
Not only one, but two Holy Cross School students ended up winning the MTYP contest!
A big CONGRATULATIONS to Yak Thon, Grade 1A, and Smriti Kumari, Grade 5T for winning the contest.  Their art got featured in the MTYP Newsletter, and they received free tickets to any MTYP show of their choice.
Ms. Chyzzy's Grade 7 class had the opportunity to learn all about Siloam Mission last month.  Firstly, a representative came to the classroom to talk to the students about all of the ways that Siloam Mission helps out our communities.  Following that visit, the 7C class then took a field trip to Siloam Mission where they were able to experience first hand the inner workings of Siloam Mission and offer their volunteer services for the morning.
December was another wonderful, yet busy month for Holy Cross!  Below you will see just a few of the fun things that happened in December.
Ms. Smaczylo's Grade 3 class was the winner of the tree decorating contest.
December 14th was Polar Express Day.  Students wore pajama's and Student Council served hot chocolate at lunch.
December 7th was Ugly Christmas Sweater Day!
December 19th Santa came to visit all of the classes and handed out candy.
December 20th was our Christmas Concert - Christmas in Egypt.

The final Basketball roster has 44 students playing Basketball this season at Holy Cross School!
Holy Cross Coaches would like to recognize everyone who has joined a Basketball team this year.
Being an athlete is no easy task, it takes so much dedication and discipline.
Go Saints!

Get, Set...Science!!!
Hey Budding Scientists!

Don’t cringe! Help for the Science Fair is finally here! Science Club and Robotics club are hosting a Science Fair Kick Off event on Thursday Jan 17th, 2019 for K-8.This event will include: Ask A Scientist for help brainstorming ideas and experimental design, explanations of project components, ideas on how to get started, support with finding resources and making presentations, and so much more.
Dear Holy Cross School families,

Soon your child will be taking part in an exciting school event- a Science fair. For Grades 4-8 it will be on April 9th, 2019 and Science expo for Grades K-4 will be on April 17th, 2019. Winners of Holy Cross School will be competing at the Bison Regional Science Fair where they can earn a free trip to Canada Wide Science Fair. This year Canada Wide Science Fair will be in Fredericton from May 12-19 2019. More details will be given to the participants as the time persists.

Science Fair Display Boards can be purchased from the office and cost is $4 per board. Students can do an individual project or with a partner.

Science offers children experiences in exploring beyond the classroom to understand more about their world. Investigating a selected Science topic in detail can open up new vistas and a new appreciation for not only this planet but the words beyond.

I would like to invite you to work along with your child as he or she selects, investigates, and reports on an appropriate area of Science. With your interest and encouragement, your child can develop the skills and attitudes he or she needs to make this project a valuable experience. But do encourage your child to do the most, if not all, of the work. Parents sometimes want to build an entire project, to make it “perfect”. It is more important that your child wrestle with problems and try to solve them, because learning is in the doing. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can, but let the final project reflect your child’s individual effort and design.

Remember your child’s success in our science fair will not be measured by ribbons, trophies, or certificates. Your child will succeed by learning and understanding more about Science and how scientists’ work. Awards are secondary. The real goal of the Science fair is stimulating your child’s curiosity about the world.

Please read the Science Fair Handbook with your child and sign the necessary forms. Let me know if you'd like more information on creating a successful science fair project. I look forward to your participation in our upcoming science fair. Please call or email anytime with your questions and suggestions. Let’s work together so that our Science fair will be a memorable and pleasant experience for your child.
