I Love To Read Month at Holy Cross School
By: Colleen Dooley
As February comes to a close, so do our I Love to Read Month activities. During the month of February, we were very fortunate to have a number of guest readers come out and read to our students. A big thank you goes out to all of our guest readers and to the teachers who supported the program and welcomed readers into their classrooms. We were very fortunate again this year to have readers from all walks of life! We had guests from the media, weather experts, The Winnipeg Goldeyes, a realtor, government leaders, the Canadian Armed Forces, Take Pride Winnipeg, and even a reader from The CNIB who read to the students in braille. Thank you to the following readers who came and shared their love of reading with our staff and students:

Colleen Bready, CTV News
Mike Koncan, Global TV Winnipeg
Josh Romanski and Nigel Batchelor, Winnipeg Goldeyes
Dougald Lamont, MLA for St. Boniface
Tanya Blatz, Tom Ethans and Louis the Lion, Take Pride Winnipeg
Brianna Fuellbrandt, Canadian National Institute for the Blind and her driver Brenda Pankhurst
Andrea Tiopo, Real Estate Professional, Century 21 Advanced Realty

Grade 8s Visit the Winnipeg Free Press
To celebrate I Love to Read month, the Grade 8s spent a morning at the WFP. We learned the process of creating a daily news paper, from planning the next days paper, to writing the articles, including photos, publishing and to the final delivery to the customer's door. We got the chance to talk to Paul Samyn, the editor, and we now have a better appreciation for the importance of news and newspapers. Thanks to the Winnipeg Free Press for a great experience!

Our Grade 7 and 8 classes had a presentation by Mathieu Huneault (MADD Oakville, Ontario) and learned about practical and legal risks of driving impaired, including licence suspensions, criminal charges, fines and even imprisonment. Our goal of having this presentation is to make people see that impaired driving is simply not worth the risk – not to the innocent people who may be involved in a crash and not to the individual making the choice to get behind the wheel impaired. Never too early to start thinking!!!

The Girls Teams have improved so much since the beginning of the season. They have created very strong relationships with each other, which we've seen translate well during our games. We've enjoyed seeing our experienced and returning players help our developing players grow during the season. They've shown a great deal of leadership, while managing to have fun.
- Coaches Ms.Aaron & Ms.Cabaguio
Boys Team II has had a great season. It is great to see so many HCS students using their after-school time to stay active! An active lifestyle promotes their learning and growth in a positive way. The team begins final playoffs at the beginning of March. Go Saints Go!
- Coach Ms. Joy Chyzzy
Boys Tier II
The boys Tier II Basketball season was finished undefeated!  Great job boys! They have been practicing hard, and playing with communication throughout the season. We look forward to seeing their success in playoffs.

Grade 7- Human Rights Museum Trip

On Feb 28th the Grade 7s attended The Right to Rights: Falun Gong Workshop at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. In this workshop, students got to meet Anastasia Lin, the Miss World Canada 2015 representative from New York and watched her film called ‘The Crown’ - based on her experience when she tried to compete in China for Miss World. The main aim of the workshop was to discuss how stereotypes and persecution are embedded within a society and beyond.
