November 2019 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The month of November is upon us and a number of significant activities will be taking place at our school.  The Holy Cross School Remembrance Day commemoration is scheduled for Friday, November 8th, at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Cross School MPR room.  This event is an opportunity for all students, staff, parents and guardians to take part in the service. Lest We Forget.

Every year parents have an opportunity to meet with all teachers to discuss their child’s academic progress.  Be sure to mark Thursday, November 27-28, in your calendar and schedule a conference with your child’s homeroom teacher.  I will also be available at that time should you need to discuss any other matters.

Just for your information, from November 25 until November 28 our school will have a Book Fair with all kinds of activities happening throughout that week.

If you require any additional assistance or have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or visit me at the office.

Respectfully,

Alexander Cap, M.Ed.
Principal

A big thank you to all the families who are now saving tabs for our Tabs for Wheelchairs program! If you haven’t already started, we are hoping that you consider saving for us after you read the 2nd Tabs for Wheelchairs 2019 Newsletter that went out in October. This newsletter went out to 151 schools, 205 companies/groups, as well as the hundreds of individuals who are saving tabs. It can be found within this school newsletter.

I would like to commend all of the classes who are working so very hard in trying to fill their water jugs!  A huge congratulations to Mr. Ewchuk’s Grade 4 class who has already filled two jugs!!! Because they have filled one jug, they are now entitled to a class party in which they have a no uniform day, a movie, and a drink.  When they fill their 3rd jug, they will get the same. Hopefully before Christmas, we will see a few more classes filling their first jug!

A huge thanks to Dr. Bajaj and the STREAM CLUB for taking on the tabs program within the school this year! A big thank you also goes out to Mrs. Pankiw who kept the program going in the eight years after my retirement from Holy Cross.

Looking forward to a great year of working together and making a difference!

Sincerely,
Gwen Buccini

2nd Tabs for Wheelchairs 2019 Newsletter

The following is our most recent update from the Tabs for Wheelchairs program. We would never be where we are today if it wasn’t for each and every one of you! Thank you so much for your continued support and dedication!

This past year and a half we have been very fortunate to be able to give 15 extra specialized wheelchairs through the generous monetary donations of two anonymous individuals. One of the very generous donors gave $30,000 last year in celebration of our 20th Anniversary and in memory of my son, Anthony Buccini. With this money, we were able to purchase seven extra wheelchairs.  This year, the same individual, in memory of Anthony again, has given a very large sum to purchase two very specialized wheelchairs. Our second very generous donor has purchased six sport wheelchairs to be used by the Manitoba Wheelchair Sport Association. In total with tabs, monetary donations, and drop-offs at the scrap yards, we have now been able to actually gift 37 wheelchairs!  What an accomplishment!!!
A very special and warm thank you to these two very caring and generous individuals!

Western Scrap Metals Inc. at 18 Sutherland Ave. in Winnipeg just informed me that we brought in 12,530 lbs. of tabs this year which is approximately 19 million tabs, which is fantastic!  Unfortunately, the price of scrap metal has declined greatly in the last few months (by 20 cents a pound) and we were not able to get as much as we usually do. We still received over $5,000 and for that we are grateful! Next year will be better!!!!

This is a perfect time to mention that if you should be cleaning out your garage or just wanting to get rid of junk, we like your junk if it’s metal!  Large objects made of metal such as old barbeques, stoves, fridges, car batteries, tire rims, old farm equipment, old cars, etc. (anything metal) bring in a lot of money.  Both Western Scrap Metal in Winnipeg and Wesman Salvage in Brandon will take all of these metals. Just ask them to add the monetary value to our Tabs for Wheelchairs account. If you’re delivering to either of these two places, you might as well take in your cans too, as together they will be worth more. This last June/July, Wesman Salvage, at 855 49th St. E. in Brandon, placed a very large bin outside their gated property with Tabs for Wheelchairs written on it and anyone could drop off any small/large metal objects.  Tabs for Wheelchairs will be getting a cheque for $506 because of all that was dropped off.

As you know, we were looking for a property to store a trailer for all of the bags of tabs that come in during the year! Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful!  However, Don & Mary Hanson of St. Vital, who were going to donate $5000 for the purchase of the trailer, suggested that we keep our storage unit on Marion St. and that they would make the monthly payments to store the tabs in this compound.  This storage unit is a plus for location, as it is very close to Windsor Park where Trailblazers is located. A big thank you to Don and Mary for their generosity!

In closing, I would like to thank Bob Barrow for creating our new Tabs for Wheelchairs logo and for the tremendous work he is doing for our program in the south east corner of our province!

Sincerely,

Dear Holy Cross School Families,

With a great deal of excitement the Holy Cross School‘s STREAM CLUB  is doing the Farm to School Fundraiser offering top quality Manitoba grown vegetables from Peak of the Market. By doing this fundraiser we are promoting healthy food choices, getting fresh vegetables at supermarket prices thanks to peak of the market, as well as supporting local Manitoba farmers. There are two bundles of vegetables to choose from. This is a fabulous opportunity to help raise money for our Holy Cross School’s scientific events while purchasing a product that is already on most people's grocery list.

Students will bring home the order forms on Monday November 4, 2019. Please return the order form (with or without orders) to your children's class. Please contact Dr. Bajaj- abajaj@holycrossschool.mb.ca or call 204-237-4936 if you have any questions.

Thank you in advance for your participation in what we hope to be successful fundraiser here at Holy Cross School.
