Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I wish to extend a warm thank you to all parents/guardians for selecting our school. Due to our excellent educational offerings, philosophy, beliefs and values we continue to attract a high number of students. I would like to wish all our students a successful 2019-2020 academic year and we will continue to strive for excellence in education.  A special thank you goes out to everyone who recently attended our important Parent Advisory Council (PAC) Meeting.  Your ongoing support is very much appreciated.

On another note, if you are interested in becoming a School Board Member, please do not hesitate to contact me at (204) 237-4936. We are still seeking two to three additional school board members.

The month of October has a number of important events scheduled but only one stands out in particular: Thanksgiving.  This is the day of  “General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed”.

I would like to leave you with a Thanksgiving prayer.

TABS FOR WHEELCHAIRS

Hopefully, your child/children have already informed you that we save tabs for the Tabs for Wheelchairs program in our school.

Holy Cross School started this program in 1998, and in the last 21 years, has presented 22 specialized wheelchairs to individuals in our province who are physically challenged. At present, we have 151 schools, 205 companies/groups and hundreds of individuals saving with us.

To be a part of this great cause, all you have to do is tear off the tabs from pop and refreshment drinks, fruit and pet food cans and anything that has a tab on it. It doesn’t matter if the tab is silver, red, blue or whatever color!  What can make your collection even better is if you spread the word to your extended family, friends and neighbors and get them saving as well!  It is amazing how in a few short months your collection can really grow!

Each classroom has a water jug and this year, when each classroom fills their first jug, they will get a class party with a no uniform day, a movie and a drink.  They have a chance to have another class party when they fill their 3rd jug and then when they fill a 5th. A few classes have actually accomplished filling a 5th jug a few years ago.

For your information, Western Scrap Metals at 18 Sutherland Ave. is where we take all the tabs every June, and in turn, we receive a cheque from them to enable us purchase brand-new specialized wheelchairs!  If you wish, you may also take your cans or any kind of metal (big or small) to Western Scrap and let them know that it is for Tabs for Wheelchairs. In doing so, they will credit our account.  Each year we get approximately $1000 extra from people doing it this way.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have saved tabs in the past and I hope that all our new families will participate as well! We are not just teaching our children about recycling, but most importantly, also showing them what can be accomplished when people work together for a cause!

Thanks for your support and Good Luck in collecting tabs!

The dedication of the girls during their practices will make for easy games ahead! Bag Up Manitoba 2019
Our school will be participating in the Bag Up Manitoba program which runs throughout the month of October.  Please send in any of your used plastic bags that you would like recycled. All bags must be clean and dry and free from debris (crumbs, receipts, garbage, etc.). Please ensure that you are only submitting previously used bags. Brand-new bags from retailers will not be accepted as this is not in the spirit of the competition and does not help raise awareness regarding plastic bag over-use. We will be collecting them and sending them off to Take Pride Winnipeg.

Here is a list of what will be accepted:
  1. Plastic items accepted:
    • grocery bags
    • retail bags
    • newspaper sleeves
    • produce bags
    • bread bags
    • ice bags
    • bubble wrap
    • case over wrap
    • pellet bags
    • salt bags
    • dry cleaning bags
    • re-sealable food bags
    • cereal bags
Bags will be accepted from October 1 – October 31

This is a great program to find new uses for these bags and perhaps it can be a great motivator for everyone who participates to make a commitment to reducing our use of disposable bags by seeing this as a time to purchase cloth reusable bags to use in the future. My hope is that every year that we participate, we have fewer bags brought in as a result.

Please send all bags to Ms. Dooley’s Grade 2D classroom. My class will be counting all bags as a great hands-on / real life math activity. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at the school.

Thank you!

Ms. Dooley
