December 2019 Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The month of December is an important time in our calendar for it enables all families to interact more closely, share the gift of love, exchange gifts and celebrate the birth of Christ.

We have a number of important events taking place at Holy Cross School and we invite everyone to attend these initiatives.  May I extend a warm thank you to all parents who attended our parent/teacher conference and our Book Fair.  Our Christmas Concert will take place on Thursday, December 19, 2019.  The first concert is scheduled at 1:00 pm and the second show will be held at 7:00 pm.  I invite all parents/guardians to support our kids and teachers for they have prepared a very interesting and exciting concert for everyone to enjoy. Space could be an issue, so please attend early the event of your choice.  Don’t forget that on Friday, December 20 – Early Dismissal occurs at 11:30 am and there will be No After School Care.
  • If you are donating to UNITED WAY through your work place, please remember that you can direct your donation specifically to Holy Cross School.
  • HCS Re-Registrations for 2020-2021 must be submitted to our office prior to February 1, 2020.
  • OPEN HOUSE at Holy Cross School – February 4, 2020.
  • Interested in becoming a School Board Member? Please contact the principal  A.S.A.P.
On behalf of all our Staff, PAC and School Board, may I extend to all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Have a safe and pleasant Holiday.  I look forward to seeing you back on Monday, January 6, 2020.

Congratulations to Dr. Bajaj for receiving a congratulatory letter from the Minister of Education regarding our past student, Jed Borillo attending the International Science Expo in Abu Dhabi:

Students must be in the proper school uniform.  This includes Grades 3-8 gym clothing as well.  Students that are not in proper uniform will have a note sent home.  The second time, the student will have to call hom for replacement clothing.  Remember all clothing must be purchased through Top Marks.
Please keep your tuition account up to date!  We accept cash, cheque, Interac, Visa and Mastercard.  If you are unable to make it into the office, we do accept credit card payments over the phone.

Should you have outstanding fees for the 2018-2019 school year, please remit payment at your earliest convenience.

Dear Parents/Guardians and Families,
As I am sure that you have noticed, the use and popularity of e-cigarettes and “vaping” has been increasing in Manitoba. These trends come after years of decreasing smoking rates across the province, particularly among youth.
This trend is concerning as the use of e-cigarettes is not without risk, with evidence emerging around addiction potential and harmful chemicals contained in the vaping liquid. Therefore, as a province, we want to ensure we are being proactive and that tobacco use is not simply being replaced by e-cigarettes.
My office has provided a reminder to all schools that the use of e-cigarettes (as with conventional cigarettes) in any enclosed public space, including schools, is prohibited under The Smoking and Vapour Products Control Act. This prohibition is important to ensure that smoking, be it tobacco or e-cigarettes, is not normalized or thought of as a risk-free activity.
As e-cigarettes are a relatively new technology, we want to ensure that parents are also able to access clear and balanced information to be able to talk to their children. We know that nobody is more influential on a young person’s decisions than their parents and would therefore like to encourage you to explore the resources available from
Health Canada -
Please take the time to examine this information and to share it with others.
Best wishes for a successful and enjoyable school year.
Kelvin Goertzen
Please ensure all of your Farm to School fundraiser forms are handed in by December 2nd, 2019.  Pick up will be on December 10th, 2019.

Chef Christophe came to show the Grade 5 classes some french cooking!  The students worked hard learning the ingredients and recipe in french before his visit. We had an amazing time making and eating delicious and nutritious wraps.  We also learned about Canada's Food Guide.

Holy Cross School is proud to present ‘The Loaned Manger’.  Join us as we travel back to Texas in the late 1800’s where we will see if Christmas needs to be more “modern”, where Curly’s lightbulbs are wound up and if desperados are really going to take off with the loaned manger!

Students have been working diligently to produce a beautiful evening of song, dance and joy.  Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students will be starting the evening off with some beautiful and festive Christmas songs as well – this is an evening you don’t want to miss!
There will be a silver collection at the door for both the 1pm show and the 7pm show!

The deadline is Monday, December 16th, 2019. All unsold booklets MUST BE RETURNED to the office.  We do have additional booklets to be sold, please contact the office if you would like more.

Both HCS 1 and 2 developmental volleyball teams had a great season. Both teams had tremendous growth throughout the season.   Awesome job to everyone who participated!  Go Saints Go!
Registration Forms will be sent home as soon as we get back from Winter Break.  ALL RE-REGISTRATIONS ALONG WITH REGISTRATION FEES MUST BE RETURNED TO HOLY CROSS BY FEBRUARY 1ST, 2020.  Our Open House is on Tuesday, February 4th, 2020 and this is when we will start filling spots for the following school year.  If your re-registration and registration fees are not submitted to the office by February 1st, 2020, your child's spot may be filled by a new applicant.
PAC is planning a used book sale at the school.  If you have any used books, please donate!  There will be collection boxes around the school, including one at the Christmas Concert.
Holy Cross School grade 7 students had excellent conversations and hands-on exercises about  #SDGs. Evidence being shared on the work being done & ideas on how to do even more. Thank you @LSF_LST for action project grant. Feeling Empowered
