Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I Love to Read month and St. Valentine’s Day are just some of the events happening this month.  A number of special guests will join us during the I Love to Read month. Valentine’s Day also called St. Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine is a day where many people exchange cards, gifts even flowers for someone special.  It is an annual holiday celebrated by people in many countries and it celebrates love and affection. We at Holy Cross School will be celebrating St. Valentines Day on Thursday, February 13, 2020 and HCS staff will take part in an in-service on Friday 14, 2020.

Reminder that February 10 -14 is Catholic Schools Week and therefore, there will be No School on Friday, February 14, 2020.  All Holy Cross School staff will be attending an in-service.

Ash Wednesday –Wednesday, February 26
Our school in-cooperation with St. Boniface High School will be holding an Ash Wednesday service at 1:00 pm in our gymnasium.  His Grace Bishop Albert LeGatt Archbishop of St. Boniface will be joining us by celebrating a mass that afternoon. Please join us!

Reading Month
Once again our Province has designated the month of February as a reading month.  A number of educational reading activities will be organized by our teaching staff to support this event.  Please keep your calendar open for we will be celebrating this event with special guests, readings of special books and many other related activities. As you can see, reading is a foundational skill to good citizenship, employment, and success in daily school activities including one’s professional life.  Together we have the power to intellectually engage our students and prepare them to face the challenges of tomorrow.

With Christian greetings,

Alexander Cap, B.Ed., M.Ed.
Principal, Holy Cross School

Music at Holy Cross

This year, Holy Cross started a Boys’ Choir, and we have had a great response.  Almost 20 boys from grade 4-6 meet after school every Monday to work with Mr. Cooper and Mrs. Lampman and develop their skills.  The Christmas concert gave them a first performance opportunity; next week’s Open House will give them a chance to showcase new repertoire.  The energy is almost too much for our small music room – we have some powerful voices.  Stay tuned for news as we find more opportunities to perform!

Our school recently held a Science Fair Kick-off on January 16, 2020, which involved Grades K-8. Everyone, teachers, and students enjoyed watching the Magic Show and classroom station activities lead by us and the visitors from IISD Experimental Lakes Area, Green Action Centre, Genome Prairie, University of Manitoba, St. Boniface Research Centre and Let’s Talk Science! The Science Fair Kick off included a variety of extra-ordinary and interesting experiments, which some students took part in, as volunteers.

Since the Science Fair Kick-off has occurred, the Science Fair will be coming up soon! This year, the Science Fair for Grades 5-8 will be held on April 14th, while the Science Expo for Grades K-4 will be on April 23rd.  Start thinking about your science fair topic! If you’re having trouble deciding on your topic, think of the subjects you find interest in. Challenge yourself and feed your curiosity. When choosing a topic, make sure you do a project that you want to do and a project that you will have fun doing. Science is fun, especially when you research or prove something that you want to know.

Following our school science fair, our school is hosting Bison Regional Science Fair from April 15-16th, 2020 and winners of HCS will be competing at Bison Regional Science Fair with other catholic schools.  If you have any question or concern, please don’t hesitate to approach Dr. Bajaj about it.

Let us do our Science projects not just because we have to, but because we want to. Let’s use our God-given talents and intelligence to make Him proud.
STREAM CLUB NEWS:

Hello everyone!

Besides having the Magic Show, each class had some scientific experiments of their own. Some classes had designated Science Club members who demonstrated simple and easy science experiments using simple items that may be found in your household! Students had a chance to try these experiments and find out the science behind them. Others had a staff member from Let’s Talk Science, IISD Experimental Lakes Area, Green Action Centre, Genome Prairie, University of Manitoba and St. Boniface Research Centre come to their class to facilitate fun-filled science-related activities with the students.

None of these would have been possible without the Holy Cross School Science Club, Robotics club, IISD Experimental Lakes Area, Green Action Centre, Genome Prairie, University of Manitoba, St. Boniface Research Centre Let’s Talk Science group and Dr. Bajaj, our Science Organizer.
