Principal’s Message

September 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians:
As you are well aware, we are facing an unusual situation not just locally but globally.

Our businesses, industry and educational institutions in Manitoba are not immune from this global pandemic.  However, every effort is made by our education and health specialist to ensure that our population is safe.  To ensure the safety of every student attending Holy Cross School this 2020-2021 year, we have implemented and put in place effective COVID 19 preventive school guidelines.   Our school website will continue to keep you informed of any potential changes or directives coming for the Manitoba Department of Education regarding this pandemic.  A number of resources related to this matter have been posted on our website to assist parents/guardians.  Please do not hesitate to access this important information on an ongoing basis.
To facilitate the management of the school a Vice Principal has been added to our staff.  Please welcome Mr. David Bueti, who has taken on the challenging position of VP at our school.  Joining us also is Mr. Dale Krawchuk who will be our new Grade 5 teacher, Mrs. Marita Perez who will be responsible for our Grade 2 and Miss Altrisha Barairo who will teach Grade 1.  A warm welcome to all our new personnel.
School Communication Protocol*
To facilitate and ensure effective stakeholders communication when dealing with school concerns and/or meeting the needs of parents/guardians, it is essential to adhere to the established protocol.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to bring forward their school or class concerns so that they may be resolved rapidly.  In some situation’s confidentiality may limit the sharing of school information including potential consequences put in place due to academic concerns or student behaviours.
All resolution of concerns or questions for students and teachers in grade Pre-K to 8 involving discipline, instruction and assessment the following communication protocol is recommended:
  1. Classroom Teacher - parents/guardians should first interact with the child’s teacher to find a solution;
  2. Vice Principal – If proposed solution has not yet improved or been resolved adequately;
  3. Principal – further guidance is required if situation has not been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties;
  4. Chair of HCS – If additional intervention is needed;
  5. Superintendent of Catholic Schools– if issue not resolved at the school level.

Introducing Mr. David Bueti - Vice Principal - Holy Cross School

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and the families of the Holy Cross Community,

Greetings! And welcome back to Holy Cross School. I am excited to have been called to join such a distinguished staff of professional educators here at Holy Cross School.  Baptized and catechized a Catholic at Holy Rosary parish, schooled and confirmed in the community of St. John Brebeuf, graduated from St. Paul’s High school and St. Paul’s College -  Catholic Education has had a major influence on my life. My vocation within Catholic schools’ began at Holy Ghost where I fulfilled the role of their first Physical Education specialist. The following year, I returned to my Alma mater – St. John Brebeuf to serve as their director of athletics for over a decade of service before accepting this position here, as your Vice Principal.

It is my most sincere hope that you embrace my style and you accept me within this community.  Please know that I plan to do everything within my power to make Holy Cross the greatest Independent school in Manitoba. It is my honour to perform the duties in my role as Vice Principal. I welcome and encourage you to please feel free to share with me with concerns, ideas, questions or challenges that you may encounter related to student discipline, reporting or follow-up. In the case of student conflict, my goal within our community is for families to understand the clear expectations and to be prepared for collaboration through the process of restorative discipline.

The goals of restorative discipline closely align with the Catholic principle of forgiveness. This style of discipline encourages hearing and understanding; the needs of, while showing empathy for, both the harmed and the harmer. It encourages accountability and responsibility allowing for the reintegration of the harmer (and if necessary, the harmed) into the community as valuable, contributing members. I am hopeful this will further the caring climate of Holy Cross’ already healthy and supportive community!

Please feel free to reach out to me by email or by calling the office line below and feel free to leave a voicemail or a message through Mrs. Jill Anderson.

Yours in faith,

David Bueti
Vice Principal

Holy Cross is now offering a Pre-Authorized Debit payment plan option to pay tuition.  Application forms will be sent home with all students on Wednesday, September 9th, 2020.  Please ensure they are returned to the office by Friday, September 11th, 2020 to allow time for the September payment to be set up in time.
Traffic Reminders Around Holy Cross School
The City of Winnipeg would like us to remind our School Community why it’s important to obey parking regulations, and that there can be possible consequences of ignoring signage.

Parking violations that will be enforced around schools include:

  • no stopping
  • no parking
  • parked on boulevard
  • wrong side of road
  • double parked
  • wrong direction
  • blocking bike path or pedestrian path
  • fire lane
  • designated space

Fines range up to $300 per violation.

A kind reminder to all parents that it is illegal to park in the back lane behind the school and that stopping in the back lane is illegal for any other reason except for traffic flow.
        A special welcome to all our new families!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and families who have participated in our school’s Tabs for Wheelchairs program over the years!  You have truly helped make this program a very successful one!
Holy Cross School started this program in 1998 and since then 159 schools, 241 companies/groups and hundreds of individuals have joined us in this very worthwhile cause! In these 22 years, through the tab collection, monetary donations and two anonymous individuals who have given very large donations, we have been able to give 40 specialized wheelchairs to individuals in our province. Thank you to all the families who have made this possible!
It’s a very simple procedure! All you need to do is collect tabs off pop cans, fruit cans, pet food cans, beer cans and any other items that have the same kind of tabs. Tabs are usually silver but can be colored as well. Every June, with the exception of this past year, we have an assembly in the gym and present a specialized wheelchair(s) to an individual(s) in our province. The Rehabilitation Centre for Children and Manitoba Possible (which used to be called The Society for Manitobans with Disabilities) give us names of young people who could benefit from a brand new specialized wheelchair. More information about the program is in another section of this newsletter.
Every classroom has a water jug in their class in which to collect the tabs.  When a class fills one jug, they will get a no uniform day, a movie and a drink.  When they fill two more jugs, they will get another class party.
Last school year, Mr. Ewchuk’s Grade 4 class was the winning class. They filled 3 water jugs and Mrs. Gulowaty’s Grade 4 class came second, filling 2 jugs.  Congratulations to both of these classes!
All tabs collected throughout the year are taken to Western Scrap Metal, and they in turn present us with a cheque for the metal’s worth at the time. This is the money we use to purchase the wheelchairs, along with any monetary donations we receive.
I am truly hoping that all of our new families will participate and start saving tabs with us this year!
Thanks for your support!
