Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

May I extend a warm thank you to all parents-guardians who remotely participated in our November 26 and 27th, parent-teacher conference regarding student report cards.  The two-day online session provided all stakeholders (teachers, parents-guardians) an opportunity to interact more closely and gain more insights into educational matters. Due to the pandemic, this online strategy enabled all of us to be more attuned to the school’s goals.

Just a kind reminder that winter is upon us and that students need to dress warmly for such conditions.

To all of you, from all of us, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Have a safe and pleasant holiday.  Kindly contact my office should you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Alexander Cap, B.Ed., M.Ed.
Principal, Holy Cross School

Vice Principal's Message

Dear Holy Cross School Community,

My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been severely affected by this global pandemic. While no school was immune to numerous challenges over the last three months, we can accept that we are moving through a period of education that is truly unprecedented. The manners in which we uphold our Catholic traditions and Faith has been considerably impacted as we learn to adapt and grow together, despite being forced apart. Both in communion and virtually; through mind, body and spirit our souls shine brightly as we work together for His common goal. Serving our community under God, we continue to explore options, find solutions, and ensure that learning in this challenging environment persists, whether that be from our students, our families or fellow staff. Meeting Holy Cross’ spiritual, social, emotional, and educational needs while complying with the mandates of our Province has been nothing short of a miracle from God and for this we have an abundance of gratitude for your patience.

As I continue to learn more about our community, I appreciate the qualities of commitment, patience, flexibility, resilience and courage that are found within the team of educators here at Holy Cross School. Their persistence for delivering high quality instruction despite seemingly insurmountable odds, is truly commendable. Deeply appreciated is the level of reverence and respect also exhibited by our students in this difficult time. Their blessings and gifts routinely astound me. I have been recently impressed with their exceptional strengths specifically in Art, Science and LICT. This community’s dedication to its children is clear. Evidenced in the parental support and patience, the tokens of appreciation from the PAC and School Board, and the grit and courage of its teachers. I am excited to see how our community will continue to flourish beyond these uncertain times.

Teacher Feature

I would like to take an opportunity to celebrate one example of educational excellence recently bestowed upon our very own, Dr. Anju Bajaj. Dr. Bajaj was awarded the K-12 Canadian EdTech Educator of the Year Award that is accompanied by a crystal plaque and a certificate.
We are blessed to have educators such as Dr. Bajaj serving within our community. The 11th Canadian International EdTech Leadership Summit 2020 “The Future of Learning in Crisis & Beyond” was pleased to announce Dr. Anju Bajaj as the recipient of its K12Ed Tech Educator of the Year Award. In addition to her classroom teaching duties as a K-8 teacher at Holy Cross School, she is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) educator for the Catholic Schools Commission of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
She provides numerous engaging, hands-on learning opportunities for students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and leadership development. These opportunities are provided through clubs such as Youth Encouraging Sustainability, Robotics, Science, and Kids’ New Horizons. Various students from these clubs interact with researchers at the St. Boniface Hospital Research and Cancer Care Manitoba. They receive special invitations to sit in on lecturers by visiting Nobel Prize winners. Dr. Bajaj founded and coordinates the nationally accredited Grades 4-12 Bison Regional Science Fair. Her students have done very well at the national level and at international level including this year’s Virtual National Science Fair.

Dr. Bajaj has taken her practical experience of positive inclusive classrooms and presented them to other educators.

She has been involved with many panel discussion facilitations and been a leader at various conferences. Her latest presentation was this fall’s national webinar “Social Distancing: Prototypes, Design and Build” for Let’s Talk Science. The webinar presented a cross-curricular based technical approach to students designing and building two metre social distancing devices.

She has collaborated with many other educators to provide STEM opportunities. One of these collaborations resulted in a toolkit, developed with First Nations communities, “Inspiring First Nation Communities towards STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Opportunities”. Dr. Bajaj has also authored or co-authored over 25 papers on science topics in national and international Journals.

In this time of learning, in crisis and beyond, Dr. Anju Bajaj inspires and empowers her students and other educators for a successful future. She exemplifies these qualities not only as a citizen, but as a community leader that Holy Cross is very proud of.

Please find below some of the classroom projects her students are currently working on.

Holy Cross School Parents and Guardians,

Did you know that in 2020 there are children in our parish community that need food services? Community food drives like ours help make sure those children and their families can get emergency food assistance when they need it, especially this year!

Holy Cross School is collecting canned goods and dry goods to donate to the local Holy Cross Parish food pantry. Our food drive will help families in our community.

Please give what you can. We are asking for nutritious canned and dry goods. Here are some suggestions:
  • Canned vegetables
  • Dried beans
  • Fruit canned in its own juices
  • Applesauce
  • Canned soups
  • Beef stew canned
  • 100% fruit juices
  • Pasta and Pasta Sauce
  • Rice and Lentils
  • Condiments like ketchup and salad dressing
  • Multigrain and low-sugar cereals
  • Granola bars

Donations will be collected in each classroom, the Grade 7 students will be delivering all the food to the church before Christmas!

If you are an alumni of the school, or know someone who is,  we want to connect with you! We are looking for old pictures and memorabilia that could add to our celebration or for former students and staff to share  a story of their time here by emailing 100th@stals.ca. As well, find information on our upcoming events and check out our online photo archive at www.stalphonsusschool.ca/100th-anniversary.

COACHES CORNER ADVICE

How to Stay Active at Holy Cross School During Remote Learning:
  • Currently with remote learning everyone needs to keep active and healthy.
  • One of the most important things you can do for you and your families physical health during this time is make sure you stay active and get at least 30 min each day!
  • It's not difficult to be physically active at home, honestly the best thing kids can do right now is go outside (and keep an appropriate social distance).
  • My first challenge to my students was to use every opportunity to go outside and play as a study break from remote learning.
Also please remember Teams account has a Phys.Ed activity section for fun ideas to stay active. Go Saints Go!
